Tragedy Strikes as Toddler Loses Life After Falling into Unsecured Manhole in Karachi’s Memon Goth
Amid efforts by Karachi’s Mayor, Murtaza Wahab, to enhance the city’s infrastructure, a heart-wrenching incident unfolded in Malir’s Memon Goth where a young child tragically lost his life after falling into an open manhole.
According to details shared by _, the unfortunate incident occurred in the Jamot Mohalla area on a Monday, when an uncovered sewer proved to be a fatal hazard.
Abdur Rehman, a grieving father who now mourns the loss of his only son, expressed his anguish, “Where can we turn, and whose door can we knock on? There seems to be no one to listen to our pain.” He highlighted that the manhole had remained without a cover for more than 15 days, despite repeated complaints lodged by local residents with the union council. However, the council staff reportedly cited a lack of available covers as the reason for their inability to address the issue.
Mayor Wahab had previously pledged to transform the city into a “Clean and Green” haven. While commendable progress has been made, such as the ban on plastic bags and improvements in basic infrastructure and street lighting, the matter of uncovered sewers persists, transforming roads into perilous zones for pedestrians and cyclists.
Upon meeting Abdur Rehman, Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad of Karachi extended his heartfelt condolences. He vowed to take necessary action against the responsible officials accountable for maintenance lapses, seeking to ensure that such tragic incidents are prevented in the future.
